Successes so far - Merstham Regeneration
This page provides examples of activities on the Merstham estate which aim to improve the quality of life of local people.
A large number of public and voluntary sector agencies run projects and services on the Merstham estate, benefiting large numbers of local people. Some have been running for many years, whilst others have developed as a result of the estate's 'Priority Place' status.
For example:
- The Merstham Community Facility runs a wide range of activities for local people, including: Arty Crafty - a monthly arts group for dads and kids, a regular Jobs Club and a weekly IT drop in. For more information visit the Merstham Community Facility website.
- Raven Housing Trust has recruited 7 young people to be junior wardens. The junior wardens are currently working with Surrey Wildlife Trust to make nesting boxes.
- NHS Surrey has completed a Health Needs Assessment of the estate - the first of its kind in Surrey. The results are being used to improve health provision on the estate.
- Action for Life has set up a monthly toddler trail with the Red Oak Children's Centre.
- The Greater London Energy Efficiency Network (GLEEN) scheme has been specifically promoted to vulnerable Merstham estate residents. Within Merstham ward, 36 households have received free insulation measures (loft and cavity wall), 37 households have received various small energy saving measures and 17 vulnerable households have benefited from either a new energy efficient boiler or a complete new central heating system.
- The Tap Into Savings water and energy saving initiative has helped 28 vulnerable private sector households and 249 housing association tenants to save water, energy and money on household bills, through advice and the installation of energy and water saving measures.
- The Merstham Community Development Worker is now a trained NHS Surrey smoking cessation advisor.
- Surrey Police has increased the number of staff it dedicates to Merstham. It now has a dedicated Merstham Sergeant along with 2 Police Constables and 2 Police Community Support Officers.
