Eschweiler 150 year anniversary visit
This page is about a visit to our German twin town to celebrated the 150 year anniversary of the founding of their town.
A group from our Twinning Association, led by the then Deputy Mayor Cllr. Mrs Rachel Turner, went over for the celebration weekend, joined by the Redhill Corps of Drums, Founder Members of the Twinning Association. They were joined by participants from Wattrelos, Eschweiler’s other twin town in France .
A warm welcome
A civic ceremony was held at the Town Hall, when Mrs Turner presented the Eschweiler Mayor, Rudi Bertram, with an engraved glass goblet. Following the ceremony, a carnival parade comprising over 100 different community groups made its way through the streets. The Twinning Association group was warmly welcomed by the spectators, accompanied by the music of the Redhill Corps of Drums.
After the procession, a concert was held in the Market Place, followed by fireworks, with an ecumenical church service the next day.
Twinning
The Borough of Reigate & Banstead has been twinned with Eschweiler for 23 years now, as well as Brunoy, near Paris. The Twinning Association covers the whole of the Borough area, not just Reigate and Banstead.
We encourage contacts between individuals and groups in our towns, and hold social and fund raising events to facilitate visits. We always welcome new members, and are particularly keen to encourage young people to participate, either by email contact or group visits.
