5. Modernising Horley Community Centre
Our aim is for Horley Community Centre, located in Horley Town Centre, to be a welcoming place and the focus for a vibrant local community
The centre, which was built around 40 years ago, needs significant improvement and a major redesign in order to meet current needs and community aspirations.
We have been looking at options for how the centre could be refurbished and revitalised so it can fulfil its potential.
The Council’s Executive agreed to progress the plans to modernise Horley Community Centre in May 2025.
Potential timeline
The proposals will now be considered by Full Council and, if agreed, the next steps could be:
- Autumn 2025 - engagement with residents and users of the centre on more detailed plans, including suitable alternative arrangements whilst the centre is closed for refurbishment.
- Early 2026 – submission of planning application
- Summer 2026 – centre closes for refurbishment
- Summer 2027 – modernised centre reopens
Community engagement
Community engagement during 2021 and 2022 has helped to develop proposals for Horley Community Centre and will continue to play an important role as the project progresses. An engagement on the detailed plans is expected to take place autumn 2025.
What you've told us
Local people have told us that providing spaces for visitors of all ages to connect and focus on their wellbeing is a priority.
In autumn 2022, we asked for people’s views on how we could improve the building and the future activities. The survey closed in November 2022. Over three-quarters of people who responded to our 2022 survey, told us that if the Council were able to host more of the activities that they are interested in (such as learning new skills, social activities or exercise classes) then they would be highly likely or likely to visit.
The survey also asked about the food and drink offer you would like to see, with 65% of all respondents wanting a coffee shop.
