"We want to make sure everyone can access help when they need it, which benefits not only them, but the borough as a whole."
The second theme of the plan is 'Support for those in need'. The theme includes two priorities: Targeted support and developing communities; and Affordable housing and tackling homelessness. This page provides a summary of the theme's priorities and objectives.
Priority 2.1: Targeted support and developing communities
This priority includes two objectives to strengthen local communities and help everyone find help when they need it.
Community building
To support and strengthen local areas, we will:
- Deliver targeted support and guidance addressing local needs through our community development team
- Deliver our Equality Objective to plan and shape services using data and local knowledge
- Work to support partner organisations and communities to work well together
Advice and practical assistance for those in need
To respond to need together with our partners, we will:
- Enable projects that address higher levels of local need and benefit communities
- Provide targeted support and assistance to residents with particular needs
- Deliver grant funding and other support to directly and indirectly support resident wellbeing and communities
Priority 2.2: Affordable housing and tackling homelessness
This priority includes three objectives to help provide housing and work with partners to address homelessness.
Affordable, social and temporary housing that helps meet local needs
To help increase the availability of much needed affordable, temporary and social rent housing, we will:
- Identify and develop suitable Council-owned sites for affordable and social housing
- Acquire more properties to expand the supply of available affordable and temporary housing
- Support local registered providers (i.e. housing associations) to increase housing availability
Making the best use of existing affordable homes
To best manage homelessness and the homes we have, we will:
- Operate an effective housing register
- Work to provide the option for social housing tenants to downsize
- Help keep homes suitable for resident needs, including through improvement schemes and grants
Helping those facing housing challenges and homelessness
To help prevent homelessness and support those facing difficulties, we will:
- Work with people at risk of homelessness to help find solutions and support
- Increase access to temporary and emergency accommodation within the borough
- Maintain housing standards and work to improve assistance for those in rented and supported housing
