2. What happens to your food recycling

How much food waste do we collect?

In 2024/25 we collected about 4,420 tonnes of food waste from the borough.

Where does your food waste go?

Food waste is reprocessed at an anaerobic digestion plant and last year most of this was processed at Surrey County Councils Eco Park (Shepperton) west Surrey. During the digestion process methane gas is produced and captured, then used to fuel engines that generate electricity. Fertiliser is also produced for farmers to grow crops.

In 2024/25 your food waste powered more than 450 homes and the fertiliser produced was sufficient to grow crops on a 350 acre farm.

Further details of the food recycling process is available on the Surrey Environment Partnership website.
