Who's it for?

  • The Games are for young people aged 7-16 who live or go to school in Surrey.
  • All the classes are for entry level and all abilities are welcome.
  • They may not have had the chance to try out a certain sport or attend a club. Perhaps they’re not super active, or are put off by the thought of competing. This is all about letting young people who are beginners have a go!
  • Last year, almost 1000 took part and loved it, 4/5 young participants said they felt happier after taking up a new activity.
  • Give your child the opportunity to try a new activity for free.

“My daughter absolutely LOVED every week from the first time.”

“Thank you for allowing (my son) to love a new sport”

“[My Son] and his friends had such a brilliant time”

Who are the coaches?

  • Each friendly activity coach has been handpicked to inspire young people.
  • They’re experts at unlocking new skills with beginners in a relaxed way, encouraging your child to discover their potential!
  • And, it goes without saying, they’re all qualified and fully vetted through DBS.

"Fantastic coaches… Definitely inspired to take it further.”

“The coach was absolutely lovely and really bought my daughter out of her shell.”

“The lady who did the training was amazing”

What activities are on offer?

This year we have a selection of free activities to choose from that are local to you. Remember, all the kids starting out will be beginners to the activity.

Here’s a quick introduction to the options on offer:

Boccia

School Years 7 - 11

Boccia - pronounced 'Bot-cha' - is a fast-growing, paralympic sport. It’s a fun game of strategy and accuracy, played indoors on a court similar in size to a badminton court. Participants throw, kick or use a ramp to propel a ball with the aim of getting closest to a 'jack' ball. Players can compete as an individual, in pairs, or as a team of three.

Dance

School Years 3 - 6

Unleash your inner rhythm and discover new moves! An amazing way to get fit and improve balance and agility. Dance is also great way to be part of a new crew and to lift your mood.

By the way, the dance offerings across the county will vary - click to the booking form to discover what’s on near YOU this spring.

Girls Touch Rugby

School Years 5 - 8

One of the fastest growing sports in the world – this is rugby without the tackles! A game of evasion, quick passing, and touch tackling - it centres on having fun and making new friends. A great team sport which is non-contact, it’s easy to learn and play and has a place for everyone whatever your sporting background. Come give it a try, you won’t regret it!

Judo

Aged between 8 and 12 on the 15th June 2024

Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and incredibly popular Olympic sport. Beginners will learn throws, groundwork and learning to fall safely – it’s also a great workout, which benefits lots of other sports! The word Judo means ‘the gentle way’ and it teaches self-respect, self-control and discipline in a fun and safe environment.

Row, Bike, Run Challenge

School Years 7 - 11

A great way to dip your toe into cross training – you get to mix it up with cycling, running and rowing! This is a triathlon you can do without a pool, but which comes with all the fun of doing different forms of exercise. The focus here is very much on variety of activities and getting into the spirit of the ‘race’.

Street Basketball

School Years 7 - 8

Street basketball is an increasingly popular version of the sport, but it has a more easy-going approach to the conventional rules of basketball.

Typically played on outdoor courts, two teams of 5 players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop 10 feet above the ground. It was born in the parks and streets of New York and is lots of fun.

Tennis

School Year 3

Tennis is a great workout and fantastic for coordination and agility, aswell as developing strategic skills. It's also a handy sport to play socially as you only need one other player!

In the training, you'll learn the fundamental skills to help your enjoyment of this sport long after the games have finished!

Inclusivity

Through the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games, we’re committed to fostering an inclusive and accessible environment for all children.

Our range of activities is designed to ensure that every child, regardless of their abilities, can participate in a welcoming and supportive setting.

If participants or their families have additional needs they’d like to discuss, please speak to your Borough or District organiser to ensure the right support is in place. You can get in touch by emailing: leisure.services@reigate-banstead.gov.uk

Games Day: Saturday 15 June 2024

Save the date!

After training, we’re holding a big celebratory event in Guildford. All the participants can come together to show parents and carers what they've achieved.

This family-friendly event will be held at the Surrey Sports Park on Saturday 15th June. There’ll be a family fun festival with a host of free activities to keep the kids active and entertained.

“This was our first time attending the Youth Games, and we loved it!

“really friendly, fantastic atmosphere. Amazing experience - thank you!”

Who organises the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games?

It's coordinated by Active Surrey in association with each Borough and District council in Surrey who provide all the free training, plus a range of local and national governing bodies.

Each year, we are welcomed back to the world-class facilities at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford who are our venue sponsor.

And of course, the whole training and event programme wouldn't exist without support from our headline sponsor, Specsavers.
