We are seeking views on a draft strategy that recognises the pivotal role that parks and open spaces play in improving health and wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

The Council owns around 3,200 acres (or 1,300 hectares) of rich and diverse green space, which includes countryside, such as Reigate Heath, Banstead Woods and Earlswood and Redhill Commons; alongside more than 70 parks, 24 allotment sites and three cemeteries. These are essential for providing relaxing natural settings and recreational opportunities that enhance the quality of life for more than 150,000 residents.

Cllr Nadean Moses, Executive Member for Sustainability and Leisure says: “We’re proud of our fabulous greenspaces, which are one of the reasons why people love Reigate & Banstead. They have a vital role to play in supporting local people’s health and wellbeing and we take very seriously our responsibility to protect them for current and future generations to enjoy.

“I’d like to thank everyone who responded to our survey last autumn. Your feedback has helped us to shape this draft strategy which sets out our vision for greenspaces that enable local communities and the natural environment to thrive. By balancing recreational needs and local aspirations while enhancing biodiversity and environmental sustainability, we think we can achieve this vision and make Reigate & Banstead’s greenspaces even better.

“We’re keen to hear your views on the draft strategy, so please make sure you have your say by 13 July. by completing a short survey or coming to a park drop-in session.”

This long-term Greenspaces Strategy will prioritise management and maintenance of the borough’s parks and open spaces in ways that can help to address many of the key challenges facing the borough. These include incorporating sustainable practices to help us respond to the impacts of climate change; and providing facilities and activities that people enjoy to encourage healthier lifestyles.
