Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, in partnership with Better Leisure, has launched the R&B Junior Games for this summer.
Junior school children in years 3 to 6 (ages 7 to 11) can choose from a range of activities for a 10-week, fully funded activity programme culminating in a celebratory competition.
There are four activities to choose from - basketball, pickleball, swimming or SEND multi sports and free weekly coaching sessions will take place throughout the summer term at the council’s three leisure centres run by Better Leisure (Donyngs in Redhill, Horley and Tadworth).
The R&B Junior Games celebration event will be hosted at Donyngs Leisure Centre on Sunday 13 July and it promises to be an action-packed day of friendly competition between the leisure centre teams. All the young people who complete the activity programme in their chosen sport will have their chance to showcase their achievements and celebrate their success.
The Executive Member for Sustainability and Leisure, Cllr Nadean Moses, says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to spend time learning new skills, meeting new people and staying fit and healthy. The free, high-quality coaching sessions and the final celebratory competition will all have an emphasis on fun and building confidence through sport.
“I want to encourage as many young people as possible to sign up, choose a sport and get active throughout the summer term. I also want to thank our Better Leisure partners for their support.”
James Brackenborough, Partnership Manager for GLL, says: “We’re excited to be hosting these free activities at our Reigate & Banstead leisure centres. Whether you’re a regular visitor or have never been to one of our centres before, there will be a warm welcome for you and a chance to experience some of the sports facilities on offer locally. We hope it will encourage participants to continue to stay active and healthy over the summer holidays and beyond.”
The sessions will be provided by a range of experienced local coaches, including Better Leisure’s own swimming teachers and previous Surrey Youth Games basketball provider, iBall. P M Active Surrey, who will be running the SEND multi sport programme across all three centres, regularly provide the council’s R&Be Active holiday sessions and have previously won the R&B Inclusive Sport Award.
The R&B Junior Games replace the Surrey Youth Games, which were run by Surrey Active until 2024, within the borough.
Registration is now open for the R&B Junior Games on the council’s website – www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/junior-games. To be eligible, participants must go to school or live in the borough.
