Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and Surrey County Council are planning improvements to the junction at Three Arch Road and Maple Road in Earlswood. The aim is to reduce congestion, improve safety and make journeys more reliable for everyone, including access to East Surrey Hospital.
Why common land is involved
To carry out the highway works, the councils need to apply to the Secretary of State for permission to:
- Deregister small areas of common land next to the highway so the junction can be improved.
- Register new replacement common land at Kiln Brow (north of Redhill Football Club) so there is no overall loss of common land.
- Carry out temporary works on parts of Earlswood Common that will remain common land before and after the project.
The replacement land at Kiln Brow will connect to the existing common and offer improved public access and habitat benefits.
What the plans include
The proposed highway improvements include:
- A wider junction layout
- Better traffic signals to reduce waiting times
- New pedestrian and cycle crossings
- Improved footpaths and a new link to Redhill Football Club
Some trees and hedgerows will need to be removed, but more will be planted as part of the scheme, along with new drainage and habitat improvements.
