1. How your Council Tax helps to fund Reigate & Banstead’s services

In an effort to minimise costs for our residents, we are freezing our share of your Council Tax this year. For all the services Reigate & Banstead Borough Council provides, a typical band D household will pay £264.87 this tax year – that’s about £5 a week (these figures are based on a two-adult household in a band D property).

While we collect your Council Tax, we retain just 10 pence in each pound to help deliver over 50 services to more than 159,000 residents and 11,500 businesses. The remainder goes to Surrey County Council, including Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, and Surrey Police.
Like many councils, we’ve not received core funding from the Government towards our services since 2017. However, our track record of good financial management means we have once again been able to set a balanced budget for the year ahead - our last as we prepare to become part of East Surrey Council in April 2027 through Local Government Reorganisation in Surrey.

We will continue to deliver the same high-quality services efficiently and effectively, and support those in our communities who need it most. We are also investing in improvements to our town centres, parks and play areas, community facilities and The Harlequin Theatre, as well as emergency and temporary housing for those in greatest housing need. We will also continue to implement environmental sustainability measures to continue to reduce our carbon emissions.

Councillor Richard Biggs, Leader, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council.
