Background
Redhill is the largest of the borough’s town centres and is identified as a Centre of Strategic Importance in the Structure Plan – the County Council's prepared planning strategy document.
It is also identified as a transport hub in the Regional Transport Strategy.
Through traffic was diverted from the town’s main shopping streets nearly twenty years ago, following which pedestrian paving was laid in London Road and the High Street to enhance the new car-free environment.
The decision to rejuvenate the town centre came in the face of retail competition from adjacent larger towns such as Croydon and Crawley and against the background of the regional shopping centre at Bluewater.
The Council also recognised that the town centre environment did little to attract spending power.
Aims and objectives
- To rejuvenate the town centre
- To attract spending power
- To help regenerate Redhill area
Previous regeneration initiatives
Station Road
Part of Station Road, one of the main shopping streets, was enhanced with silver-grey granite paving.
This high quality durable material has also been used in High Street along with a resin-bound pale brown gravel. Both streets feature new stylish lighting and stainless steel street furniture.
A key feature of the High Street is a line of 17 six-metre-tall maple trees set in large stainless steel clad planters. The planters also provide casual seating.
This work was funded by the Borough Council with a generous contribution from the Prudential, owner of The Belfry shopping centre.
Maple Square
The junction of the High Street with Station Road has been re-designed as a 'town square' space.
It was named 'Maple Square' following a competition in the Surrey Mirror in which local residents submitted their ideas for names. The square has been made into a focal point in the town by the installation of a paving feature and landmark seating area.
