This page explains how we deal with complaints about atmospheric pollution, including smoke, fumes, gases and smells.

Environmental Health Services has power to deal with the following categories of complaint:

  • Smoke from premises that causes a statutory nuisance.
  • Emission of dark smoke from chimneys or as a result of industrial or trade burning.
  • Fumes and gases from private dwellings that causes a statutory nuisance.
  • Dust steam or smell arising from industrial, trade or business premises that causes a statutory nuisance.

See the Council's advice on how to minimise smoke nuisance from domestic bonfires.
