Business clinical waste disposal

Clinical Waste is any waste which poses a threat of infection to humans. The term also includes drugs or other pharmaceutical products.

Clinical waste is mainly produced by hospitals, health clinics, doctors' surgeries and veterinary practices, but also arises from residential homes, nursing homes and private households.

Examples of clinical waste include:

  • human or animal tissue
  • blood or other bodily fluids
  • excretions
  • drugs or other pharmaceutical products
  • swabs or dressings
  • emptied stoma and colostomy bags
  • syringes, needles or other sharp instruments.

Reigate & Banstead do not operate a business clinical waste collection service.  This includes Care Homes.  However our domestic residential clinical waste service is handled by PHS Group, see the PHS Group.

There are alternative suppliers available. It is your responsibility to ensure that a registered carrier is used for this type of waste, the Environment Agency website has a public register of all companies who are registered to remove this waste.

NHS England has further information on the safe disposal of clinical waste under the Health Technical Memorandum 07-01: Management and disposal of healthcare waste (NHS England website).
