Reigate Falcons help celebrate Olympic handover

Olympic Handover Flags were raised across the Country to celebrate the moment when London became the official Olympic Games Host City.

When the Mayor of London accepted the Olympic Flag in Beijing, the eyes of the world turned to London and the UK as the next Summer Host City.

Reigate Falcons

Reigate Falcons Basketball Club members were invited to take a closer look at Reigate & Banstead’s Olympic flag during their training session at Donyngs Recreation Centre in Redhill.

Sue Reeves Coach of the Reigate Falcons said “The Olympic Games have inspired the country to get involved in sport, and it has been wonderful so many of the team GB performing so well.

"It is fabulous that so many minority sports having prime time media coverage and leading the world in the medal tables.”

Reigate Falcons are committed to quality basketball in the community; we have four teams competing in the Surrey league, men, ladies, U16 boys and U14 boys, and are always looking to develop our club.

Our aim for the 2008 / 2009 season is to add an U16 girls team. Anyone who wants to play basketball, regardless of age, gender, height, or previous playing experience, should contact the Club.

Olympic volunteers

Donyngs Recreation Centre Manager Tony Blatchford said, “I'm very excited to see our Olympic flag and I wish the best of luck to everyone who has the dream of competing in the 2012 Olympics.

"A number of Donyngs Recreation Centre team members will be volunteering for the Games, so that we can play an active part in 2012.  I would encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering to sign up now."

Sport investment

Cllr Adam De Save, Executive Member for Leisure & Wellbeing, said: “Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has committed to investing £15.25million in their three sports centres over the next six years and £1.8million in sports pavilions.

"The Council continues to invest in its sports facilities to help promote more active lifestyles amongst its residents and help nurture the Borough’s budding Olympians.”

Support for the games

Cllr Chris White, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “While the Olympic Games in 2012 are happening in London, it’s clear there’s strong support for them throughout the length and breadth of the country.

"More than 400 councils arranged parties and flag-raising events to mark the start of an exciting four years.”

The Reigate and Banstead Borough flag is now proudly displayed outside the Town Hall in Reigate until 30 September.

People can register their interest in volunteering for the 2012 Games at the London 2012 website (opens in new window).
