Priory Pavilion officially opened
The Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, Cllr Roger Newstead, officially opened the new Pavilion in Priory Park, Reigate, on Thursday 12 June 2008.
Cllr Adam De Save, Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “The Pavilion is a key part of Priory Park’s restoration, it’s unique, contemporary design is a central feature of the Park’s new layout. I am sure visitors to the Park will be struck by the building’s distinctive beauty."

Sustainable building
Cllr De Save went on to explain the building's sustainable qualities, explaining “The Pavilion is fitted with a ground source heat pump, a high-tech sustainable energy solution that is expected to save 13.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. It will act as a cooling system, keeping the pavilion warm in winter and cool in summer, and will also be used to provide the pavilion’s hot water supply.”
The Pavilion’s project architect Niclas Dunnebacke of Dominique Perrault, the architectural firm responsible for the Bibliothèque nationale De France in Paris and the Olympic Swimming Pool in Berlin explained the concepts that had led to the design.
The construction of the Pavilion forms a major part of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s multi-million pound project to renovate and enhance Priory Park. The restoration project is funded by a £4.2m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Borough Council and contributions from corporate sponsors.
Urban Kitchen outlet
The Pavilion building will house the park’s Information Centre, public toilets, the Park Manager’s base and a café, run by local business, Urban Kitchen.
Steven Emerson, Director of Urban Kitchen, said: “It is very exciting to be opening our new Urban Kitchen outlet in Priory Park’s Pavilion. This great new building and the park’s beautiful surroundings make an ideal location.
“Our Pavilion outlet will offer a similar range of drinks and snacks to our Church Street premises, including fresh juices and smoothies, homemade cakes and pastries, ethically sourced teas and coffees. We have developed a new “Pavilion” menu to offer an exciting new range of healthy hot and cold snacks.”
Competition winner announced
The winner of the Canon Priory Park Photo Competition, Adam Lunberg, was also announced at the opening. His photograph of his daughter enjoying Priory Park’s children playground was deemed inspired by the competition’s judges.
Celebration Weekend
The restoration of Priory Park will culminate in the Priory Park Celebration Weekend taking place on 18, 19 and 20 July. There will be a host of activities in the park during the two days, followed by one of Reigate Summer Music’s outdoor concerts each evening.
The Pavilion will be open between 9am and 6pm seven days a week, with shorter hours in the winter.
