Join in with big Spring Clean

News release date 7 April 2008 about Reigate & Banstead's Spring Clean initiative.

Residents, community groups, schools and businesses across the borough are being encouraged to show they love where they live by getting involved in Reigate & Banstead’s big Spring Clean which kicks off this month (April 2008).

The Spring Clean, which is part of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign, aims to demonstrate what can be achieved when local communities and the Council come together with the joint aim of making the borough a cleaner place for everyone.

A number of groups have already signed up to organise their own spring clean, with help from the Council, to tidy their village, street, park or school, and the Council is urging others to join in.

Love Where You Live

Cllr Julian Ellacott, Executive Member for Environment, said: “The Council works very hard to keep the Borough clean and tidy by fighting litter, recycling waste, and bringing improvements to the look of our borough's villages and towns, but we can only do so much.

“The main aim of the Spring Clean is to raise awareness what we can all do to help keep our streets, parks and pavements cleaner and tidier and involve those who live and work in the borough in keeping our environment clean.

"We know that thousands of residents are already passionate about maintaining the beauty of the borough, and we want to involve more people.

"We can all take a bit more ownership of our local environment, from remembering not to drop litter, through reporting full litter bins, to organising a community litter pick - there are lots of ways to get involved.

“It is fantastic that so many people are already taking such pride in their area by organising their own local litter-picks and clean-up events, and we look forward to helping with lots of similar activities across the Borough.

"I hope all our residents will put some love into where they live!"

Cleaned up

Spring Clean events have already been held at Merstham Cricket Club and in Tattenhams. The cricket club collected enough rubbish to fill two large skips.  In Tattenhams volunteers collected 30 bags of litter in a clean up of Tattenham Recreation Ground, the allotments and part of Nork Park.

Twenty residents of Subrosa Estate in Merstham are gave their area a spring clean and Reigate Cubs collected ten sacks of rubbish when they gave the Castle Grounds in Reigate a spring clean last weekend (29 and 30 March).

Local Spring Clean events have also been organised for Burgh Heath village; Reigate Heath, Woodfield School in Merstham and Nork Park.

The Council supplies the litter picks, bags and protective gloves and will clear all the collected rubbish on the following day.
