Woodmansterne Street shopping parade to get £40,000 make-over
News release dated 21 January 2008 about improvements to Woodmansterne Street shopping parade.
Improvements to the village shopping parade in Woodmansterne Street, Woodmansterne, are set to get underway this week (week commencing 21 January 2007) as part of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s scheme to enhance village centres and shopping parades across the Borough.
“comments from residents and traders told us what is important to them in creating a cleaner, safer, well-maintained and well-functioning shopping parade." (Cllr Richard Mantle, Ward Councillor for Chipstead, Hooley & Woodmansterne)
The £40,000 make-over will cover the stretch of Woodmansterne Street between the junction of Carshalton Road and The Woodman public house and into Chipstead Way up to the Church Hall entrance.
Improvements include:
Footway resurfacing and the installation of new crossing points to improve pedestrian safety
Renewing litter bins, street furniture and signage
Installation of new cycle racks
New timber posts, to protect pedestrians from vehicles mounting the kerb, will replace the existing concrete and plastic bollards.
Well functioning shopping parade
The well-used recycling ‘bring’ site in the car park of The Woodman public house will also be upgraded in order to reduce the build up of mud and water around the bins that is currently experienced during wet weather.
Cllr Richard Mantle, Ward Councillor for Chipstead, Hooley & Woodmansterne, said: “Consultation with residents and traders told us what is important to them in creating a cleaner, safer, well maintained and well-functioning local shopping centre.
"I’d like to thank everyone who commented on the scheme and helped us to focus on what is important for the village.”
Fellow Ward Councillor Richard Wagner added: “The work in Woodmansterne follows similar refurbishment at the shopping parades in Chipstead and Hooley, where traders and residents alike have declared themselves delighted with the outcome.”
Before work could start, the Council needed to get the final scheme approved by Surrey County Council as the Highway Authority with responsibility for roads and footway improvements. The scheme is being implemented in co-ordination with the County Council’s highway improvement programme.
Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter, Executive Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “Providing well maintained, viable shopping parades is a priority for the Council.
"We aim to improve 15 village centres and shopping parades across the Borough over three years. Eight schemes are already complete; two, including the Woodmansterne scheme are due to get underway, and another six were given the go-ahead by the Executive yesterday.
“The village and local shopping parade enhancement scheme are part of the Council’s 'Love Where You Live' civic pride campaign, which aims to build awareness of what we can all do to keep our streets and parks cleaner and tidier so our residents love where they live.”
The improvements are expected to take five weeks to complete. To ensure the works are completed safely and as quickly as possible it will be necessary to use temporary traffic signals and close parts of the footway at certain times.
Some works will also be undertaken on Sundays to minimise inconvenience to local businesses. However access will be maintained to shops and residents at all times.
The Council has written to nearby residents and businesses to inform them about the commencement of the project.
Progress so far
£235,000 has already been spent over the last two years on eight enhancement schemes at Station Approach in Chipstead; Station Road, Horley; High Street, Tadworth; Somerset Road, Meadvale; Trehaven Parade and Western Parade in, Woodhatch; Star Lane, Hooley and Slipshatch Road, Reigate.
In addition to the scheme at Woodmansterne Street, improvements at Shelvers Hill, Tadworth are scheduled to get underway in the next couple of months.
The Council’s Executive gave the go-ahead to a further six schemes on Thursday night (17 January 2008) at Nutfield Road, Merstham; Brighton Road, Salfords; South West Parade in Woodhatch; The Brow in Whitebushes; and two stretches of Walton Street in Walton on the Hill (Deans Lane to Meadow Walk (£35,000 and United Reformed Church to No 71 £30,000).
