The car park is re-opening on time after being closed this summer to have an improved layout, better disabled parking and pedestrian access and new landscaping.

Cllr Tom Stoddart, Executive Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “Bell Street car park’s layout has been reconfigured to improve access and ease of parking. All the existing 112 spaces have been retained, including four disabled spaces and the car park has been extended to accommodate the new layout. The pedestrian entrance to the park from Bell Street has been improved and new cycle racks have been installed.

“The ground works for attractive new landscaping have been completed but the planting of the Hornbeam trees between the rows of parking bays and other plants will take place in the next planting season.”

The Heritage Lottery Fund paid two thirds of the cost of the park restoration project, including the car park improvements.

The car park was closed during the improvement works because archaeological investigations beneath the car park surface were required as part of the HLF bid before the changes took place, and an existing electricity supply runs through the car park. Closure was also necessary to maintain the health and safety of the public and the contractor's staff.

Cllr Stoddart added: "We apologise for any temporary inconvenience that was experienced as a result of the closure, but I am sure people will agree that the car park is much-improved and the changes will provide long-term benefits for Bell Street car park users and visitors to the park.”

Elsewhere in Priory Park, work is progressing well on other elements of the restoration project, including the construction of the new pavilion, the children's playground with its nautical theme and the multi-use games area and skate ramps.

The Priory Park restoration project has received £4.2m backing from the Heritage Lottery Fund and commercial support from businesses Legal & General, Parador Properties, Canon (UK) Ltd, Watson Wyatt Worldwide, Fidelity International and Charles Church.
