£20k Makeover for Hooley shopping parade

News release dated 30 July 2007 about a makeover for the shopping parade in Hooley.

The village shopping parade in Hooley is set to benefit from a £20,000 makeover as part of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s scheme to transform villages and shopping parades across the Borough.

The enhancements getting underway on the A23 Brighton Road, near Star Lane, include footway resurfacing; installation of new litterbins; construction of a micro glass-recycling centre; new chain-link fencing to replace the damaged chestnut paling fence which runs adjacent to the lay-by, and bollards to protect pedestrians from vehicles mounting the kerb.

In addition, attractive tubs of plants have been installed along the shopping parade, to add a touch of colour.

Cllr John Stephenson, Ward Councillor for Chipstead, Hooley & Woodmansterne, said: “Viable, vital and well maintained shopping parades are a priority for the Council. Input from residents and traders through the Council’s Local Community Action Plan (LCAP) process told us what is important to them in creating a clean, well maintained, safe and well-functioning local shopping centre for Hooley.”

Fellow Ward Councillor, Richard Wagner, added: “Design proposals for the Hooley shopping parade improvements were drawn up; then residents, traders and local ward councillors were asked for their views before the plans were finalised. Footways came high on the list of things that need improving. Street furniture, street lighting, pedestrian safety and recycling facilities were also raised as issues for consideration.”

Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter, Executive Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “We aim to improve 15 village centres and shopping parades across the Borough over three years. Six schemes are already complete, two are underway, and another five are in the early planning stages.

“The village and local shopping parade enhancement scheme are part of the Council’s 'Love Where You Live' civic pride campaign, which aims to build awareness of what we can all do to keep our streets and parks cleaner and tidier so our residents love where they live.”

The Hooley improvements, which got underway last week, are expected to be completed in mid-August.

Before work could start, the Council needed to get the final scheme approved by the Highways Agency, who are responsible for the busy A23.
