News release dated 1 June 2007 about improvements being made to five villages and shopping parades.

Reigate & Borough Council’s Executive gave the go-ahead on Thursday (24 May 2007) to five enhancement schemes at Western Parade and Slipshatch Road in Woodhatch (estimated to cost £45,000 and £15,000 respectively); Shelvers Hill, Tadworth (£40,000); Woodmansterne Street, Woodmansterne (30,000) and Walton Street in Walton on the Hill (£40,000).

Proposed enhancements include footway resurfacing; improving accessibility for the disabled and safer pedestrian links; improving or renewing street furniture where required and the removal of unnecessary signs.  Where possible, amendments to the existing parking arrangements are also being considered, along with additional recycling facilities.

Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter, Executive Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “Viable, vital and well maintained shopping parades are a priority for the Council. The enhancement schemes for villages and shopping parades form part of the Council’s 2006-2009 Corporate Plan.

“Feedback with each community told us what is important to them in creating clean, well maintained, safe and well functioning local centres. Roads, footways and traffic congestion came high on the list of things that need improving. Street furniture, street lighting and clean streets were also raised as issues for consideration. This input has provided us with the initial considerations for improvements in each area.

"Local ward members, residents and traders will be asked for their further views on the design proposals, and their comments will be taken into consideration when finalising the plans for each scheme."

The final schemes will require permission from Surrey County Council as the Highway Authority with responsibility for road and footways improvements.

Each scheme will be implemented in co-ordination with the County Council’s scheduled road improvements.

The village and local shopping parade enhancement scheme aims to improve 15 village centres and shopping parades across the Borough over three years. £180,000 funding has already been spent over the last two years on the first six enhancement schemes. Improvements at Station Approach in Chipstead; High Street, Tadworth; Trehaven Parade, Woodhatch and Somerset Road, Meadvale are now complete and schemes at Station Road, Horley; and Star Lane, Hooley are scheduled to get underway soon.

Cllr Dr Poulter added: These latest schemes will be promoted under the banner of the Council's soon to be launched 'Love Where You Live' civic pride campaign, which aims to build awareness of what we can all do to keep our streets, parks, and pavements cleaner and tidier."
