First Steps for a new Redhill Town Centre
News release dated 17 July 2007 about the first steps in regenerating Redhill town centre.
The first steps in regenerating Redhill town centre were taken last week when Reigate & Banstead Borough Council called the inaugural group meeting of key town centre groups and organisations.
“Our vision for Redhill is for it to become a vibrant and thriving town centre, easy to reach and easy to move around in." (Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter, Redhill East Conservative)
The Redhill town centre 'stakeholder' group was hosted at the Belfry management centre and included representatives from local retailers, transport companies, investors, local interest groups, developers, medical practices, education, housing companies and from Surrey County Council, Surrey Economic Development Agency, and Surrey Economic Partnership.
The purpose of the meeting was to give an up-date on plans and aspirations for a comprehensive regeneration of Redhill town centre as well as to begin a co-ordinated and joined up approach to providing a more attractive and vibrant town centre for residents.
Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter (Redhill East, Conservative) started the meeting by describing the Borough Council's vision for Redhill: “Our vision for Redhill is for it to become a vibrant and thriving town centre, easy to reach and easy to move around in, providing a mix of activities and uses to encourage visitors throughout the day and evening and which will provide residents and visitors with a high quality and enjoyable environment.”
The Leader of the Borough Council, Cllr Dr Lynne Hack with Cllr Dr Daniel Poulter, Executive Portfolio Member responsible for Regeneration and Transport, highlighted a holistic approach to town centre regeneration that included several important aims:
- To increase the number of retail outlets and range of shops in Redhill Town Centre
- To encourage environmentally sustainable development in Redhill through high quality construction and design
- To continue to improve transport links both by bus and train by taking into account the needs of both commuters and daytime users of public transport
- To work to improve the night time economy and entertainment in the Redhill
The Redhill Town Centre ‘stakeholder’ group will continue to meet regularly to discuss the evolving plans for the regeneration of Redhill town centre. The process of Redhill regeneration will also involve active and ongoing public consultation and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council are in the process of setting up a residents’ consultation page on their website.
