Council launches Love Where You Live at Redhill Carnival

News release dated 1 June 2007 about the forthcoming launch of the Love Where You Live campaign for raising awareness of caring for the local environment.

The first phase of an environment-wide campaign is launched at Redhill Carnival this weekend.

Amid the colourful floats at Redhill Carnival this year the Borough Council will launch a ‘civic pride’ borough-wide campaign, Love Where You Live.

The residents and those who work or visit the borough will be crucial to the success of the campaign. In a mix of education and enforcement, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is aiming to change public behaviour rather than continually increasing the Council’s clean up operation.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Julian Ellacott said: “The main aim of this campaign is to raise awareness and involve those who live and work in the Borough in keeping our environment clean.

“The Council works very hard to keep the Borough clean and tidy by fighting litter, recycling waste, and bringing improvements to the look of our Borough's villages and towns, but we can only do so much.

"We know that thousands of residents are already passionate about maintaining the beauty of the Borough, and we want to involve more people. From remembering not to drop litter, through reporting full litterbins, to organising a community litter pick - there are lots of ways to get involved, and we will encourage you in every way. We can all take a bit more ownership of our local environment."

The local environment needs to be cared for, in many ways over and above the services the Borough Council provides. And the message behind this campaign is to build up a real awareness of where we are and what we can do to help keep our streets, parks and pavements cleaner and tidier.

Residents who have ideas for enhancing their areas are encouraged to contact their local Councillor and get together to discuss ways they can work. Each Councillor will then liaise with the Council’s Neighbourhood Services department. For an organised clean-up for example the Council can supply rubbish bags, gloves and litter-pickers and collect the rubbish afterwards.
