Bell Street car park - all 112 spaces to stay after summer improvement works

News statement dated 30 March 2007 about the improvements to Bell Street car park as part of the Priory Park restoration project.

Bell Street car park in Reigate will close for three months from June to August 2007 to carry out improvements to the car park as part of the Priory Park restoration project.

There will be no loss of the existing 112 parking spaces in the revised layout, that include four disabled spaces, and new cycle parking facilities.  The car park will be extended southwards to accommodate the new layout.

When complete Bell Street car park will benefit from an improved layout, attractive landscaping, improvements to disabled access and safer pedestrian access.  The Heritage Lottery fund is paying two thirds of the cost of the park project, including the cat park.

The work will involve carrying out archaeological investigations beneath the existing car park surface; reconfiguring the car park layout to improve access and disabled parking; landscaping works, including introducing Hornbeam trees between the rows of parking bays; and resurfacing the car park.

Trenches for the archaeological investigations and an electricity supply run right through the car park.  To complete the work in an effective manner and maintain the health and safety of the public and the contractor's staff, makes it necessary to shut the entire car park, rather than completing the work in stages. This will also enable the works to be completed more quickly and cheaply, enabling the car park to re-open for the start of the new school term in September.

When determining the timing of the closure the Council considered a number of issues.  An analysis of the ticket records show the summer months are the quietest time of year for Bell Street car park and that there will be sufficient capacity in Bancroft Road car park during the closure period. This timing will also cause the least inconvenience to Reigate Priory School, located in the park, as the majority of the works coincide with the summer holidays.  The summer months should also provide the most favourable walking conditions.

Nearer the time the closure details will be publicised again and signage will be put up in Bell Street car park advising visitors of the forthcoming closure and giving details of alternative parking.  During the closure signage will direct motorists to Bancroft Road car park.

We apologise for any temporary inconvenience that will be caused by the closure of the car park, however the improvements being made will provide long-term benefits for Bell Street car park users and visitors to the park.
