£100,000 to spruce up villages and shopping parades
News release dated 2 October 2006 about plans to improve three shopping parades across the borough.
Shopping parades in Woodhatch, Hooley and Tadworth are to benefit from a share of £100,000 in the second phase of a scheme to transform villages and shopping parades across the Borough.
“The community told us what is important to them in creating clean, well maintained, safe and well functioning local centres, which provided us with the initial considerations for improvements in each area.” (Cllr Roger Newstead, Executive Member for Local Economy & Infrastructure)
The Borough Council’s Executive gave the go-ahead (Thursday 28 September 2006) to enhancement schemes at:
- Trehaven Parade, Woodhatch (estimated to cost £47,000)
- Star Lane, Hooley (£20,000)
- High Street, Tadworth (£18,000).
Viable, vital and well maintained shopping parades
Councillor Roger Newstead, Executive Member for Local Economy and Infrastructure, said: “Viable, vital and well maintained shopping parades are a priority for the Council. The enhancement scheme for villages and shopping parades forms part of the Council’s 2006-2009 Corporate Plan.
“In Woodhatch and Hooley, feedback through the Local Community Action Plan (LCAP) process told us what is important to the community in creating clean, well maintained, safe and well functioning local centres. In Tadworth, local ward members provided initial community feedback.
“Roads and footways came high on the list of things that need improving. Street furniture, street lighting and parking were also raised as issues for consideration.
“This input has provided us with the initial considerations for improvements in each area.”
Proposed enhancements include:
- footway resurfacing;
- improving or renewing street furniture where required and
- installing new mini recycling sites at Hooley and Tadworth,
Somerset Road in Meadvale could also benefit from improvements if constraints of narrow roads and pavements can be overcome in designing a suitable scheme.
What’s next?
Cllr Newstead continued: “Local ward members, residents and traders will be asked for their views on the design proposals. Their comments will be taken into consideration when finalising the plans for each scheme.
"The final schemes will require permission from Surrey County Council as the Highway Authority with responsibility for road and footways improvements.
“Each scheme will be implemented in co-ordination with the County Council’s schedule road improvements."
The village and shopping parade enhancement scheme aims to improve 15 village centres and shopping parades across the Borough over the next three years.
The projects will be funded by the Borough Council under its capital programme.
£80,000 funding was approved in September 2005 for the first two enhancement schemes at Station Approach in Chipstead, which has now been completed, and Station Road, Horley, which is scheduled to get underway during October.
