Redhill/Horley regeneration to support new road, rail and bus links
News release dated 21 June 2006 about the council's successful bid for funding towards infrastructure improvements.
The regeneration of Redhill and Horley town centres will bring improved road, rail and bus links to the borough after the council successfully bid for money to fund new transport schemes.
"This is our opportunity to claw back money from Government and ensure new housing comes with the necessary infrastructure." (Cllr Mrs Spiers, Council Leader)
The Government’s new growth points scheme initiative invited local partners to come forward with proposals for housing growth, linked into wider strategies for economic growth, for town centre renewal, for regeneration as well as for meeting local need for homes.
The regeneration plans for Redhill and Horley town centres contain proposals for residential as well as retail and business units which meet the Government's criteria for new growth points.
Cllr Mrs Spiers, Leader of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, said: "Our borough is a magnet for housing developers because of its location. We have had houses thrust upon us for too many years without adequate infrastructure to support them.
"This is our opportunity to claw back money from Government to redo years of neglect and ensure new housing comes with the necessary infrastructure.
"We have set-out plans for the regeneration of Horley and Redhill town centres. Both plans are about renewing the town centres with a mix of residential and retail units along with business development in Redhill.
"Plans that are popular with residents. We are glad that the Government recognises the importance of these developments and is prepared to fund the infrastructure to support them."
The money being provided by the Government is not for bricks and mortar but to support roads, rail and bus links. The council's bid includes:
- the extension of Fastway from Horley to Redhill/Reigate via East Surrey Hospital
- improving the A23/M23 Hooley junction
- extending the TfL Zone 6 to Redhill/Reigate & Gatwick Airport and
- additional capacity/services at Redhill Station.
Cllr Mrs Spiers, cont.: "The homes in the town centres would be in addition to the SE Plan allocation but in return we hope to get substantial investment in infrastructure improvements in our borough.
"We will ensure that this growth is sustainable and well planned, acceptable environmentally and realistic in terms of infrastructure, particularly transport. In October we will hear which of our proposals will receive a share of the initial £40 million Government funding."
