Bus shelters
This section provides information about the bus shelters you see on the Borough's streets.
The majority of bus shelters throughout the Borough are supplied and maintained by an advertising company.
Under this agreement the Company provides bus shelters in exchange for their exclusive right to advertise on the bus shelter.
The Council is currently renegotiating this agreement.
As well as supplying advertising shelters, the agreement requires the company to supply a number of non-advertising shelters, over which the Borough has more discretion as to location.
Each shelter requires planning permission from the Borough and has to be licensed by the Highway Authority i.e. Surrey County Council.
Some of the bus shelters owned and maintained by the Borough Council. These shelters tend to be in more rural or lesser-used locations, which are obviously less attractive to the advertising companies.
Unfortunately there is no longer a Council budget for new bus shelters, although additions shelters may be included as part of new developments.
