Painshill Park and Gardens
This section provides information Painshill Park and Gardens, one of finest 18th century landscape gardens in Europe.
Painshill is recognised as one of finest 18th century landscape gardens in Europe and has much to admire.
A gothic temple, waterwheel, grotto, ruined abbey, gothic tower and many more treasures are sited in the grounds, which are staged around a large serpentine lake.
Yet Painshill would not be the attraction it is today were it not for the intervention of Elmbridge Borough Council in the 1980s.
The once beautiful estate had fallen derelict after changing hands on a number of occasions, its golden era long forgotten.
But in 1981 Elmbridge Council stepped in and purchased its 158 acres forming the Painshill Trust. There followed an ambitious and painstaking restoration which resulted in the magnificent grounds which people can enjoy today.
