Gatton Park
This section provides information about Gatton Park, a gem in the heart of the Borough.
Described as one of the Borough's hidden gems, Gatton Park is a manor and park whose history can be traced to the Domesday Survey.
As well as being home to the Royal Alexandra and Albert School, Gatton Park is open to the public on the first Sunday of each month between February and October.
There is plenty for visitors to see, including the 13th century church, town hall, lakes, woodland, lost gardens, views and rock and water garden under restoration.
Gatton was a deerpark in the medieval period before the great Lancelot 'Capability' Brown landscaped the grounds in the 1760s.
Gatton Park was one of Brown's larger commissions. His design incorporated views over parkland to a string of lakes and a serpentine, to a temple and the woodland beyond.
The continued restoration of the gardens relies on visitors' generosity.
The process of restoration is as interesting as the finished product.
The management at Gatton Park is encouraging the public to share this experience but warn visitors that parts of the trail are hilly and can be muddy and slippery in wet weather.
