Play Strategy
This section provides information about the Big Lottery Play Strategy providing money for children's play.
Play is a hugely important part of a child’s life. It is vital to their development, health and happiness.
When children play they learn all sorts of things – new physical skills, exploration, imagination, forming social relationships, testing boundaries, building confidence and most importantly, they have fun.
The Government has recognised the importance of letting children have access to FREE play provision and has developed the Children’s Play Initiative to help local authorities develop and implement play strategies and identify play projects. This recognised need has led to the Big Lottery allocating limited funding to Local Authorities from a new programme called ‘Children’s Play’.
Big Lottery bid
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council put together a bid for approximately £221,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Children’s Play initiative. The initiative aims to ‘create, improve and develop children and young people’s free local play spaces and opportunities throughout England, according to need’.
To receive its share of the money the Borough Council has to develop a play strategy and submit a portfolio of projects. Working in partnership with Tandridge District Council and the local play partnership we have developed the strategy as well as identified and access funding for future sustainable play projects.
