About nursery school
Surrey County Council is the local education provider. The Borough Council is providing this section for your infomation, to help answer your questions about nursery schools, including what age range nurseries cater for, opening hours and information about nursery school grants.
Nursery schools are for children aged between three and five.
Nursery Schools fall into three categories
- state
- voluntary
- private
The fees vary according to the provider.
Many nurseries provide some three-year-olds and all four-year-olds with free part-time places, which are paid for by the government.
This funding is known as the Nursery Education Grant.

They will help you find out more about your local options and and help if you need extra childcare to fit in with your working hours.
What your child will learn
Through carefully planned play, children at nursery school develop skills such as speaking, listening, persistence, concentration, learning to work together and co-operating with other children.
They also learn early reading, writing and numbers.
The nursery classes are designed to give them the best chance of achieving their Early Learning Goals by the end of the first year in primary school.
Opening hours
Nursery schools offer full or half days, and are staffed by teachers and assistants.
Nursery schools and classes provide a core day of 9am - 3.30pm.
Children are offered full-time and part-time places, with a half day usually lasting two and a half hours.
Some nursery schools provide extra care between 8am-6pm to suit the working hours of parents.
When children reach the age of five they are eligible to go to primary school.
