Finding out about the need for housing in the area

This page tells you how the Council assesses housing need in the area and what the results of the latest survey are.

Every three or four years the Council carries out research to assess the amount of housing need in the Borough.

The latest Housing Needs Survey was carried out in mid 2005 when a proportion of households in the borough were sent questionnaires. Details of the survey can be found below.

In April 2007 the Council commissioned a new survey - called a Strategic Housing Market Assessment - this is being carried out in partnership with four other east Surrey local authorities.

The final report of the Strategic Housing Market Assessment will be available in late 2007. In the meantime the Survey conducted in 2005 is still relevant.

The 2005 Housing Needs Survey

The purpose of the Survey was to find out about the levels of housing need experienced by people living in the Borough in 2005 and over the next five years.

The Survey helps the Council prepare its housing strategy, housing policies, and some of its planning policies.

The Survey has highlighted the continuing need to provide affordable housing for rent, affordable housing for sale and market housing in the borough. In addition the Survey also examined housing costs, housing support issues and the needs of "concealed" households.
