Why the Garden Waste Service is changing

This page explains why the Garden Waste Service is changing to a brown wheeled bin collection.

Thanks to the effort of residents in recycling their garden waste we sold over 600,000 plastic garden waste sacks last year, and composted nearly 6,000 tonnes of garden waste. And, while all gardeners should feel proud about the amount of waste that hasn’t gone into landfill, unfortunately, the 600,000 empty bags have.

Each year, this service gets more and more popular and the number of plastic sacks sold is forecast to grow. But this means more sacks will end up in landfill, there will be more car journeys to buy the sacks, and there will be more sacks for our crews to lift. Each year, each garden waste crew member lifts the equivalent of 176 elephants.
The new service will mean fewer vehicles on the road, we won’t be disposing of 600,000 plastic bags into landfill and the bin will be delivered to your door so no need for trips to buy more bags when you run out.

The old plastic sacks

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council plastic garden waste sacks will continue to be sold in Council Help shops until the end of August 2008 but please only purchase what you know you will use. The plastic sacks will continue to be collected until 17 October 2008. However, from 15 September you will have to ring our Hotline 01737 276444 to arrange collection.
