Commercial waste - clinical waste disposal

This section provides information for businesses disposing of clinical waste.

Clinical Waste is any waste which poses a threat of infection to humans. The term also includes drugs or other pharmaceutical products.

Clinical waste is mainly produced by hospitals, health clinics, doctors' surgeries and veterinary practices, but also arises from residential homes, nursing homes and private households.

Examples of clinical waste include:

The Council operates a commercial clinical waste collection. This service will collect low grade category ‘E’ & ‘B’ clinical waste which includes incontinence pads, dialysis, or sharps boxes.

For Commercial waste there is a charge depending on the amount and number of collections, each company will have to be looked at individually.

There is no charge for removal of clinical waste from domestic properties.

Commercial Clinical Waste Charges 2005/6 are as follows:

The annual costs provides for up to three sacks per week to be collected from a property. Additional sacks collected will be charged as above. The Council does not provide any storage bins for the clinical waste sacks.

Various private contractors can also provide a clinical waste collection and contact numbers can be found in yellow pages under Medical Waste Disposal or on the internet.

Before enterring into a contract for the collection of clinical waste, businesses have a duty to make sure that the contractor is registered as a ‘waste carrier’ by the Environment Agency and are fully compliant under the Duty of Care legislation.
