What can I recycle?
This section provides information about what you can recycle and how.
The principal ways in which you can recycle are:
- through our door to door collection service
- at our recycling sites
- at home, e.g. home composting.
Currently residents can recycle the following through our door to door service.
- paper
- card
- cans
- garden waste.
Residents can recycle the following at recycling sites. Not all sites accept everything so please check first.
- paper
- card
- cans
- plastic bottles
- glass (coloured and clear)
- textiles (including soft toys and shoes)
- foil (silver and coloured)
- books.
Electrical and electronic equipment
Many other items can be taken directly to the rubbish tip for recycling. These include waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling (WEEE).
Bulky plastic
Earlswood and Epsom Community Recycling Centres (formerly named the Civic Amenity Site), which is run by Surrey County Council, has recently introduced a bulky plastic recycling service.
The following materials are suitable for recycling via the bulky plastics service;
- plastic containers such as buckets, storage tubs, etc
- plastic drain pipes, guttering, etc
- large children's toys
- broken plastic garden furniture
- plastic car bumpers, panels
- broken wheeled bins
- broken recycling boxes
- flower pots (larger than 12 inches in diameter. Smaller pots are unacceptable as the pots shatter as they are made from a different type of plastic).
The recycling process includes two magnets, so small metal components are fine, such as parts on children's toys e.g. axles on a large plastic truck.
Not suitable for bulky plastics recycling
The following items are not suitable for bulky plastics recycling:
- electrical goods made of plastic like vacuum cleaners or hair dryers
- UPVC window frames
- any items with wood content
- plastic films such as shrink-wrap
- plastic food packaging such as yogurt pots, tubs, trays or plastic milk bottles
