The Council's Recycling Policy

This section provides an introduction to the Council's policy on recycling.

Do you care about the future of the local environment?

The Borough Council does and we are involved in a wide range of initiatives to minimise waste, increase recycling, and provide a sustainable future for us all.

The Borough has one of the best recycling records in the county but the Council believes there is still room for substantial improvement.

We provide a house to house collection service for all paper, card and cans, which is currently used by 77% of householders.

We also have over 40 recycling sites across the Borough. We have begun a programme to extend this number to 50, with special effort made to ensure they are located in places which are well-used on a day to day basis.

These sites have banks for paper, card, cans, plastic bottles, glass (green and unusual colours, clear and amber) and in some cases textiles, books and foil.

The Council is currently running a Garden Waste Scheme which involves house to house collections in homes throughout the Borough.

In April 2005 we introduced plastic bottle banks at some recycling sites, currently 50% of our sites now have this facility. The Council is still identifying other sites and hopes in the long term to be able to offer an increased number of plastic bottle banks across the Borough.

We also work closely in partnership with neighbouring local authorities on plans like the Eastern Surrey Waste Strategy.

Recycling and the environment has been placed as the top priority of our Corporate Plan 2006-09. We hope to be able increase the range of materials that can be recycled within the Borough and review our house to house collections.
