Home composting
This section provides information about a great new offer on home composters.
The Council is encouraging residents to start home composting in the latest part of our drive to protect the local environment.
The public can play their part to increase recycling by taking advantage of a new special deal on home composters.
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has joined up with Surrey County Council and the Recycle Now Home Composting Campaign, a government funded scheme to encourage residents to reduce the waste they send to landfill. Thanks to this arrangement residents can buy composters at a greatly reduced rate.
What's so great about home composting?
By composting at home you can recycle up to a third of the rubbish in your bin and put less out for refuse collection for landfill.
Composting is an inexpensive natural process that transforms kitchen and garden waste into nutrient rich food for your garden. It's easy to make and even easier to use.
Organic waste sent to landfill can't break down properly because squashed under all the other waste it does not have access to air. So methane is produced, a powerful greenhouse gas. Home composting avoids this and creates a free natural soil improver for your garden.
You can compost:
- fruit and vegetable peelings
- old flowers and nettles
- tea bags
- grass cuttings
- crushed egg shells
- egg and cereal boxes
- Tissues, papertowels and napkins
- Toilet and kitchen rolls
- Shredded paper.
