Collecting Refuse

Your wheeled bin

This section provides information about the types of dustbin available to residents in Reigate and Banstead.

The Council operates a wheeled bin refuse collection service which started in 1997. At that time each property was provided with a wheeled bin, unless it was decided that use of a bin was impractical, e.g. if the property has access problems.

A standard Reigate and Banstead wheelie bin for refuse

The Council’s policy is to collect one bin with the lid closed, per household.

There are two sizes of domestic wheeled bins, one is 140 litres and the other is 240 litres. Please be aware the Council may introduce an additional annual charge for properties with a 240 litre wheeled refuse bin once relevant legislation has been enacted.

If you currently use a 240 litre bin and wish to avoid the charges, by starting to recycle or recycling more, you would be offered a free exchange to the standard 140 litre bin.

If you are planning to move to a property, you need to check whether the previous residents is leaving the wheeled bin.  If not, you as the resident will be responsible for purchasing a new compatible standard 140 litre wheeled bin, so that the household waste can be collected.

'If a resident believes that their property is unsuitable to have a wheeled bin, the resident can apply in writing to Neighbourhood Services to have the property assessed for the black sack service provision.(Properties built after 1997 cannot apply for the black sack service, as the properties should have been designed to accommodate the provision and collection of a wheeled bin.').

If you are moving into a new development the wheeled bin and recycling box should be provided by the developer.

To purchase the standard or the large bin, please contact the Help Line on 01737 276000.

Living in a flat or shared property

There are two sizes of communal bins for use in flats. They are 660 or 1100 litre containers.

The Council’s policy is to collect all refuse that is contained within the communal bins. This would not include bulky items e.g. Chairs, TV’s etc.

It is the responsibility of the landlord or managing agents to provide sufficient containers and for clearing any excess waste not placed in the communal bins.
