Refuse collection - bulky items
This section describes arrangements for dealing with large, heavy or bulky items of waste.
The Council can arrange a collection service for bulky, large or heavy household items such as:
- three-piece suites
- beds
- wardrobes
- white goods such as washing machines or items that will not fit in your 140 litre wheeled bin.
This service is chargeable, starting at £27.00 for up to 3 units (not including fridges or freezers). The units are worked out depending on the size of the item.
For example a three seater sofa is a large item so it works out as two units. A cooker would be a medium item which is 1 unit and a bathroom sink would be a small item which is quarter of a unit.
For a quote or to book an appointment, please call the Help Line on 01737 276000.
For residents in receipt of Housing or Council tax benefit, there is a discounted service for up to 3 units. Please have your benefit reference number ready when making a booking.
Fridges and freezers
Since January 2003, fridges and freezers have to be disposed of as special hazardous waste.
The collected fridges and freezers are taken to a specialist disposal company where all the CFCs from the cooling unit and insulation are removed within a sealed machine to ensure they do not escape to damage the ozone layer.
The Council can only collect fridges and freezers on a Wednesday at a charge of £27.00 per item.
Please note the Council charges £95.00 to collect commercial fridges and freezers.
Taking the item to the tip
Bulky and heavy household items can be disposed of free of charge at the Surrey County Council civic amenity sites.
Earlswood Civic Amenity Site (Community Recycling Centre) has a bulky plastic service at the site.
