Walking buses - the healthy way to travel
This section provides information and advice about walking buses, a healthy way to get to school.
While we have been very successful in helping pupils get to school by bus, there is no more healthy way of getting in than the 'walking bus'.
Reigate and Banstead Borough Council was the first in Surrey and one of the first nationally to introduce the walking bus scheme, which proved immensely popular with the children.
Parents were happy too, since unlike a normal bus, the youngsters didn't have to pay a fare.
The concept involves youngsters accompanied by volunteer parents, walking along the route to school, picking up pupils on the way.
The children walk in a line, and each wears a highly visible yellow vestwith 'Walking Bus' emblazoned across it.
Hundreds of pupils from schools all over the Borough joined the
initiative, with some infant schools even running two buses taking
in different routes.
Twelve walking buses have been created by the scheme, since it
began in 1999. The Council would like to thank all parents who have
volunteered their time to making the scheme such a success.
