Council initiatives - pushing the boundaries
This section provides information about the Council initiatives in regards to working with schools. We have come up with pioneering alternative ways of getting to school.
The Council was the first in the county and among the first nationally to introduce the idea of the walking 'schoolbus', in which youngsters walk in pairs as on a schoolbus.
We also piloted a scheme called Car Free Friday, in which schoolchildren were challenged to find alternatives to coming to school by car.
And we have the best record in the country in a nationwide scheme called Eco-Schools
Other initiatives have involved partnership work with bus companies to link areas which are not well served to popular schools.
This work is all in addition to Safe Routes to Schools, a project conducted in partnership by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council and Surrey County Council which involves creating safer and more accessible pedestrian and cycle routes around the Borough.
The Council also won a grant from the government to create a Home Zone in the
area of Nutley Lane, Reigate.
It involves making the road and paved areas more attractive and making extra provision for cyclists and pedestrians.
The Borough Council keeps parents up to date with our work to reduce the school run via our annual newsletters.
