Safe Food-Good Hygiene Award
The award was developed to acknowledge the achievements of food proprietors who exceeded the basic requirements for providing safe food.
Environmental Health Officers assess the business against a tough criteria not only to meet the current legal standard but ensuring staff are properly trained and supervised, that a food safety management system is in place, that a good history of compliance with food safety law and best practice has been maintained.

The winners received their awards from the Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, Cllr Mrs Frances Dixon at a special ceremony hosted by Fidelity Investment Services Ltd.

Cllr Allen Kay, Executive Member for Community Safety and Transport, said:
“The Safe Food – Good Hygiene Award was launched by the council during last year’s National Food Safety Week as a way of recognising those businesses that have gone the extra mile to achieve consistently higher standards of food safety and hygiene.
“One of the aims in highlighting these high achievers is to inform customer choice in terms of cleanliness – something customers tell us is very important to them – and, in turn, encourage other businesses to become similarly recognised via the scheme.
“We hope that today’s winners will act as champions to others in their sector and I would encourage other local businesses to apply for the standard."
Applying for the Award
Eligibility
- All caterers including restaurants, takeaways and pubs
- Any retailer selling unwrapped, high-risk foods (e.g. delicatessens, licensed butchers)
Who may apply
- The owner of a food business or person responsible for day-to-day management of a facility.
When to apply
Applications will be invited annually in January.
Standards to be met
Award winners must demonstrate a high commitment to food safety and hygiene. Each business must:
- Comply with the food safety and hygiene laws
- Have a documented food safety management system (based on the principles of HACCP or Hazard Analysis); and
- Meet the training standards for all food handlers, as outlined in the relevant Industry Guide.
- A risk score of 5 or below in each of the following performance areas*:
- Food hygiene and safety (including food handling practices, procedures and temperature control)
- Structure and equipment (including cleanliness, layout, condition of structure, lighting, ventilation and facilities)
- Confidence in management and food safety control systems
*According to Food Safety Act 1990 Code of Practice, Annex 5 ‘Food Hygiene Scoring System’
