Contaminated Land
This section provides information about contaminated land.
We have chosen to put this information on our site because of the increasing numbers of requests about the council role. It is particularly relevant to people who are buying, selling or developing land.
As with other legal terms, contaminated land is defined within the legislation for the purposes of the council making its investigations. It does not have the same meaning as may be used in ordinary day-to-day language. For more information visit the Definition of contaminated land page.
Most land that is contaminated is as a result of human activity but there are cases where naturally occurring compounds result in land being described as contaminated.
For more information about the role of the Council including the meaning of contaminated land, the information it is gathering and how it will go about inspecting land visit the General duties of the council page.
If you are interested to know more about contaminated land as a consideration if you are selling a property visit the Contaminated Land and Conveyancing page.
If you would like to know more about sources of information about your property visit the Sources of Information About Land page.
