Cleaner Streets

Working with schools - The People and Places Programme

This section provides information about Council's award-winning People and Places programme. The aim is to provide a clean and tidy environment for the Borough and with the help of the community protect it.

Thousands of youngsters every year enjoy taking part in the Council's award-winning People and Places programme, in which we work with the community to protect the environment.

Glittering events such as Star for a Night and Future Fantastic provide schoolchildren with a stage on which they can display their wonderful talents, while Boroughwide competitions like Litter Free Schools engender a team spirit as pupils of all ages work to help win the gold award for their school or college.

Aside from all the fun, the programme has a serious theme, to provide a clean and tidy environment for the Borough. When the Council first launched People and Places, the Borough had a cleanliness index of 51, below the national average.

Our cleanliness index rocketed and this year stands at 78, significantly above the national average, while the Council went on to receive national recognition.

People and Places Manager Terry Boardman won the Tidy Britain Group 'programme manager of the year award' in 1998.

The scheme is still recognised as among the best in the country and in 2002 won a national prize for innovation.

Thanks to the efforts of Terry and his team, local schools, the community as a whole and the local business who sponsor the events, People and Places continues to be a programme in which the whole Borough can take great pride in.
