Question Time 2007
Over 70 young people (aged 13-18 years) from five local schools attended a ‘Question Time’ session in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall in Reigate.
It was “Question Time” for a panel of Councillors and community representatives on Thursday, 1 November 2007, when students from around the borough got the chance to quiz them about local issues.
The event at the Town Hall, Reigate, to promote Local Democracy was organised to give young people a taste of local politics.
Over 70 students from Reigate School and Dunottar School in Reigate, The Beacon School, Banstead, Oakwood School in Horley and St Bede’s School and The Warwick School in Redhill, posed questions to the group of panellists, in a “Question Time” style debate, on a range of issues including:
- provision of activities for young people
- encouraging young people to get involved in politics and to vote
- recycling and the environment
- the borough's housing targets
- school places
- the regeneration of Horley
- new leisure centre proposals
- plans for the Harlequin Theatre
- hospital and healthcare provision
- crime and antisocial-behaviour and volunteering opportunities
Giving their opinions on the topics posed were Cllr Dr Lynne Hack, Leader of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and Surrey County Councillor; Cllr Dr Ben Mearns, Member for Earlswood and Whitebushes Ward and Deputy Leader of Conservative Group; Inspector Clive Davies, Borough Inspector, Surrey Police; Gareth Owen, Manager of Reigate & Banstead Council for Voluntary Service and Chris Chandler, Group Editor of Leader Life Series.
