Merstham Regeneration

This section is about plans to improve services in the Merstham area.

Background

Shopping parade in Merstham

The Borough Council’s Corporate Plan 2006/09 identified Merstham as a key area for regeneration. It highlights the need for the Council to work with other organisations and local groups to improve the physical environment and tackle social problems.

Community development

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Surrey County Council, Raven Housing Trust, Surrey Primary Care Trust (PCT), Surrey Police and local churches jointly support a community development project for Merstham. A Community Development Worker has been employed to support local groups in developing projects which will benefit Merstham, and to help ensure service providers and community groups work together to benefit the Merstham community. To contact Merstham’s Community Development Worker email mersthamcdproject@reigate-banstead.gov.uk.

Community facilities

In 2005, work was commissioned to investigate the need to improve community facilities on the estate. The findings are published in the  Merstham Community Provision Report (PDF, opens in new window) (1.46MB).

Findings were fed back to Merstham residents at two events on the estate during 2006. These findings can also be found in the draft  Merstham Supplementary Planning Document (PDF opens in new window) (1.23MB) which is part of the Local Development Framework (LDF).

Merstham will soon benefit from a new ‘community shop’ on Portland Drive. The community shop will include a computer suite, room for community use and a new office base for Merstham’s Community Development Worker.

The community shop is the forerunner of plans for a  new multi-purpose community hub on the corner of Portland Drive and Bletchingly Road. The hub could bring together GP services, the library and a local church under the same roof. It would also provide rooms for hire, a community café, an internet café and space for training courses, amongst other things.

Information on these and other projects can be found in the  spring / summer 2008 edition of Merstham News (PDF opens in new window) (614.1kB).

Housing in Merstham

The council is working with all the service providers and other agencies who would be directly involved in the multi-purpose centre to take the project forward. This is a complicated project involving several different partners and funding sources.
