Litter Free School Awards
This page tells you about an initiative that encourages young people to look after their environment, both at home, at school and in the community.
Schools contribute substantially to the levels of litter in the borough - the Litter FREE School Awards is just one initiative that enables the Council to work towards increasing awareness in order to improve and maintain a clear and tidy environment.

The actual awards ceremony is the finale to a more in depth programme that offers advice, whilst encouraging and supporting the schools themselves to improve their own conditions.
Levels of achievement
The scheme awards a
- GOLD
- SILVER or
- BRONZE
certificate to each participating school, based in the Code of Practice in Litter and Refuse.
Litter assessments
An appointment is made to visit each school at the beginning of the summer term, this visit assesses the cleanliness (litter levels) of a number of areas including the:
- Approach road
- Driveway
- Car Park
- Playground
- Playing fields
- Areas around the litter bins
- Flower beds
As recommended under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, these areas are inspected and graded with and A-D score, based on
- A=3 points
- B=2 points
- C=1 point and
- D=0 points.
The total score is calculated and given back to the school.
Later in the term a surprise visit is made and the same areas are inspected.
The two scores are combined and divided by the maximum total and then multiplied by 100.
A score of
- 70+ achieves a BRONZE
- 80+ achieves a SILVER and
- 90+ achieves a GOLD.
If a school achieves less than 70 then no certificate is awarded, however, we do offer advice on how the school can improve its cleaning and general appearance.
Celebration & reward
To celebrate and reward the pupils, teachers and caretakers for their hard work an award ceremony is organised.
