The Government Offices for the Regions were set up in 1994. They bring together services in the 9 English regions from the following departments: Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Department for Trade and Industry, Department for Education and Skills, Department for Transport, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Home Office, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Department of Health, and Department for Work and Pensions.
Following the machinery of government government changes in May 2006, the Government Offices became part of the Department for Communities and Local Government. With their corporate centre, the Regional Co-ordination Unit (RCU), the Government Offices offer experience and expertise to Whitehall Departments in the development of policy and in the way that policies are best implemented, and are the primary means by which a wide range of Government policies and programmes are delivered in the English regions.
The Government Offices are also responsible for various regionally administered funding schemes, which include funds available to Voluntary and Community Sector groups. Information on funding schemes administered by the Government Offices that originate in the participating departments for this site is included.
Government Office for the South East
Government Office for the South East covers the districts of Bracknell Forest, Brighton and Hove, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Kent, Medway, Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire, Portsmouth, Reading, Slough, Southampton, Surrey, West Berkshire, West Sussex, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham. Its offices are located at Bridge House, Guildford, Surrey.
