The Department of Health's purpose is to support the government to improve the health and well being of the population.

Our 5000 staff are responsible for driving forward change and modernisation in the NHS and social care, as well as improving standards of public health.

The Department's work is far reaching - ranging from setting national standards on waiting and emergency care, for example, to promoting healthier lifestyles and living.

Our work is centred in Leeds and London, following recent plans to move staff from offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Nottingham and Sheffield.
We have recently embarked on a major Change Programme, designed to ensure we provide more effective leadership to the NHS and social care, and a better service to Ministers and the public in our role as a leading government Department.

The changes will be far-reaching, affecting everything we do in the Department.
