Community Initiatives
This page contains details of funding for community initiatives from Europe.
GOSE are responsible for the management, development and day-to-day administration of a number of European regional community initiatives.
In addition to the priority Objective areas around 5% of the European Structural Fund budget will fund four Community Initiatives. The UK will receive around £916 million for these in 2000- 2006. More information on the national picture
Funding under the Community initiatives complement the priority objectives, that are Objective 1,2 and 3. They help find solutions to problems common to a number of, or all of member states and regions, for example tackling social inclusion.
The Three Community Initiatives for the period 2000-2006 were:
Interreg: This European funded programme encourages co-operation between countries and across borders to encourage balanced and sustainable development across the European Community. The focus is very much on collaborative working with project partners, learning from each other’s experience, knowledge, their similarities and their differences. There are three strands to the programme – Interreg IIIA, IIIB and IIIC.
- Leader +: The Leader+ programme is a six year community initiative for assisting rural communities in improving the quality of life and economic prosperity in their local area. Partnerships of local organisations and people (local action groups) receive funds to:
- identify development needs within their rural communities which they set out in a development plan
develop and test small-scale, innovative projects to meet these development needs.
Urban: The Urban programme is a European Union initiative focusing on how small urban areas can be affected by social and economic problems. The programme covers 10 wards in Dartford and Gravesham in Kent, which are home to around 45,000 people. The aim of the programme is to help the area achieve social inclusion in line with the rest of the Thames Gateway area and to share in the prosperity of the South East of England.
