How to apply for grants

Application basics

This page contains information covering the basics of writing an application for grants.

People often try to write an application as a means of working out what they should be doing. This is a recipe for disaster. Good preparation is key, hence, the more information you get ready in advance the easier and quicker you will find it to complete an application form or write your proposal. Thinking, planning, discussing, budgeting, re-thinking, re-planning and re-budgeting all take time, but it is time well spent.

Due to fundraising growth, it is common place for the donor/grant maker to supply an application form together with a set of guidelines. Such forms tell you precisely what information to supply, it is important to use this format when required to do so. You may also wish to attach a covering letter or additional supporting information, but be mindful of the fact that your application is likely to be judged on the information that you have put in the grant maker’s submission form.
